IWC: The new Ingenieur Automatic 40mm dark blue

The IWC Ingenieur Automatic 40, a modern tribute to Gérald Genta's legendary 1970s model (Ingenieur SL), comes with a dark blue dial – a classic choice for sports watches with integrated bracelets. The new model retains the signature design of its predecessors, including a stainless steel case with a circular ring attached by five functional screws, an integrated bracelet with "H" links and a dial with a lattice pattern.

The blue dial is finished with a physical vapor deposition (PVD) technique to achieve a metallic luster, and is complemented by a ring with a "snail" thread finish and blue date discs.

Measuring 40 mm in diameter and 10.8 mm in height, the watch embodies the vintage-inspired yet contemporary look of the Ingenieur line. It is powered by IWC's in-house base movement, caliber 32111, which provides a 120-hour power reserve and uses the Pellaton double "ratchet" winding system for greater efficiency. True to the Ingenieur's history as an engineer's watch, the movement is protected from magnetic fields by a soft iron casing, composed of the face of the dial and the inner case back cover.

While the blue dial makes for an attractive addition, criticism has been directed at the use of the basic movement given the price, especially when compared to competitors offering more advanced calibers in this segment. Priced at $11,700, the new model offers the same specs as its predecessors, including 100m water resistance and a sturdy integrated steel bracelet. Although it comes to market after the trend for integrated bracelet watches has waned, the blue Ingenieur's availability could attract collectors looking for its timeless design.
